Nose and Ear Hair
As an electrologist, one of the questions I get asked by my hair removal clients is, Why? Why am I suddenly growing hair out of my ears, nose, or chin?
Here's the thing, those hairs were there before; they were just smaller. We are born with millions of hair follicles, and we usually don't notice the hair growth until our peach fuzz turns into thick terminal hairs. There are a few different causes of excess hair growth. Genetics, reaction to medications/ medical procedures, diseases and disorders of the endocrine system, hormone disorders (PCOS), and hormonal changes ( menopause, puberty, pregnancy).
When men see increased hair on the nose, eyebrows, ears, and back, this is likely caused by increased testosterone. While you have more hair growing from your body in some places, you may start to see a decrease in the hair growth on your head. One of the by-products of testosterone, called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), can affect these hair follicles on the top of your head, causing male pattern baldness.
Women sometimes see a change in hair growth when they hit menopause. What happens is that your body doesn't produce as much estrogen, but you still have testosterone. This testosterone can turn light vellus hairs into dark coarse, thick hair. Because of this, women may notice more hair growth in hormonal areas on the chin, upper lip, and neck. You may also notice some thinning of your hair on top of your head due to lower estrogen levels.
Let's talk about the removal of unwanted excess hair. There are non-permanent options like waxing, trimming, and depilatory creams. It's best to avoid waxing places like the inside of the nostrils and ear canal. The hair inside your nostrils and ear canal is essential and blocks debris. Waxing these hairs gets rid of that barrier and can also cause damage to the eardrums and delicate skin in the nose.
Laser hair removal is a great option for those with dark, coarse, and thick hair but won't work on gray, blond, or red hair.
While removing hair from the ear canal or nostrils is not recommended. Electrolysis can work on any hair color or skin type and can be used to remove hair from almost every else, including on the ear lobes, on top of the nose, and on the eyebrows.
